Goa BJP MLA's Alcohol Ban Proposal Faces Opposition in Assembly
Goa BJP MLA Premendra Shet's proposal to ban alcohol consumption in the state has been met with resistance from his colleagues in the legislative assembly. Citing concerns over road accidents and industrial mishaps linked to alcohol, Shet's demand found no support, with many highlighting its potential impact on tourism and local businesses.

This Tuesday, Goa BJP MLA Premendra Shet's call to prohibit alcohol consumption within the state received little support from his legislative assembly colleagues. Shet, addressing the house, argued that for a 'Viksit Bharat' and 'Viksit Goa,' the consumption of alcohol should be banned, although production and export to other states could continue.
His appeal, citing alcohol-related accidents and industrial fatalities, failed to convince fellow legislators. BJP woman MLA Delilah Lobo questioned whether Shet intended for restaurants to close, while AAP MLA Cruz Silva said banning alcohol in Goa was impractical due to its impact on employment and tourism.
Sankalp Amonkar, another BJP MLA, acknowledged concerns about alcohol abuse but opposed an outright ban. Others, including independent MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye and Goa Forward Party legislator Vijai Sardesai, highlighted the significant revenue generated by the liquor industry and the need for better regulation rather than a ban.
