MRPS's Three-Decade Struggle Yields Supreme Victory for SC Sub-Categorisation

The relentless three-decade campaign led by the Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) has resulted in a landmark Supreme Court ruling on Thursday. The decree authorizes states to establish sub-classifications within Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) for quota allocation.

Founder-President of MRPS, Manda Krishna Madiga, expressed gratitude towards the societal and political backing for their rightful demand. 'Today, dharma won,' he proclaimed, dedicating the victory to those who sacrificed during the struggle, and to the MRPS cadre who worked tirelessly.

A seven-judge constitution bench, led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, delivered a 6:1 majority verdict. Formed in 1994, MRPS became a significant force in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, striving for SC sub-categorisation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi once assured MRPS's demand for a categorisation, showing the issue's significance.
