A tehsildar in Budaun was duped out of Rs 50,000 after receiving a WhatsApp message from someone posing as the district magistrate, officials revealed on Tuesday.

The scam message was sent from a WhatsApp account using the DM's profile picture and name, making it appear genuine. The tehsildar transferred the money without verifying the message's authenticity.

Upon contacting the actual district magistrate, the tehsildar realized he had been deceived by cyber criminals. Police identified that the message originated from an Indian number but was operated from Sri Lanka. A case has been registered against unknown individuals and efforts to refund the money are underway.
