Ferguson Protests Mark 10th Anniversary of Michael Brown Shooting
Police in Ferguson arrested two people following protests on the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown's fatal shooting by officer Darren Wilson. The protests highlighted the ongoing impact of the event on the national Black Lives Matter movement. Further arrests are expected as investigations continue.
In the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, two individuals were arrested following protests commemorating the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown's death. Brown, an unarmed Black teenager, was fatally shot by Darren Wilson, a white police officer, an event which ignited the national Black Lives Matter movement.
The initial gathering of around 40 people outside the police headquarters began peacefully, with attendees eating and drinking. However, tensions escalated around midnight when some protestors attempted to dismantle a fence surrounding the station, leading to the arrests. Police are reviewing footage and anticipate additional arrests.
The St. Louis Fire Department also placed a member on leave for an insensitive social media post, showing the ongoing sensitivity of the issue. A 2015 DOJ report criticized the Ferguson police department's treatment of Black residents, an issue that remains poignant today.
