Thai Prime Minister Removed Over Ethical Violation
Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was removed from office after the Constitutional Court ruled he committed an ethical violation by appointing a jailed official to his Cabinet. A court in Thailand has ousted Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, citing an ethical violation in his Cabinet appointments. This upheaval in Thai politics comes shortly after the country's Constitutional Court ordered the dissolution of the main opposition party.
The Constitutional Court's ruling identified Srettha's appointment of a Cabinet member, previously jailed for attempting to bribe a court official, as the basis for his removal. The decision was passed by a narrow 5-4 vote.
Until Parliament appoints a new prime minister, the current Cabinet will remain as a caretaker government. Parliament, scheduled to vote on Friday, holds no time limit for selecting a replacement. Dissolution of Parliament and a new election remain possible outcomes.
