A Russian court has ordered the pre-trial detention of U.S. citizen Joseph Tater until Oct. 14, the court announced on Thursday. Tater faces accusations of violence against a police officer, according to court statements.
The detention follows a court ruling on Wednesday that sentenced Tater to 15 days in jail for petty hooliganism. The Russian news agency Interfax had earlier reported that Tater was detained on Aug. 12 for hooliganism and later assaulted a police officer, prompting a separate criminal case against him.
The charges highlight ongoing tensions and concerns surrounding the treatment of foreign nationals in Russia.
