South Korea and the United States started their annual summertime military exercises on Monday, aiming to improve their joint preparedness against North Korea's growing weapons and cyber threats. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises will conclude on August 29.
The drills incorporate realistic threats spanning across all domains, focusing on North Korea's missile threats, GPS jamming, cyberattacks, and other recent incidents. South Korea will concurrently conduct Ulchi civil defense drills, simulating a nuclear attack scenario.
President Yoon Suk Yeol emphasized the importance of thorough readiness against North Korea, labeling it as the most reckless and irrational country globally. About 19,000 South Korean troops will participate in the exercises, which include field maneuvers, live fire, and amphibious drills.
