Tensions Surge: Philippine Government Condemns Chinese Actions in the South China Sea
The Philippine government has criticized China for aggressive and illegal actions in the South China Sea, following multiple clashes involving air and sea vessels. The Philippine maritime council reported unsafe maneuvers and obstructions by Chinese forces, urging for diplomatic resolution and adherence to international law.
The Philippine government harshly criticized China on Monday for what it called 'repeated aggressive, unprofessional and illegal' actions in the South China Sea. This follows a series of confrontations involving air and maritime incidents over the past week.
The Philippines' national maritime council reported that Chinese aircraft executed unsafe maneuvers against a civilian aircraft during patrols over the Scarborough shoal and Subi reef. Additionally, on Sunday, Chinese vessels allegedly 'blocked, rammed and fired water cannons' at a Filipino fisheries vessel during a resupply mission in Sabina shoal.
The maritime council expressed alarm over these actions, emphasizing that they undermine China's purported commitment to de-escalate tensions and uphold dialogue. The Philippines reaffirmed its dedication to diplomatic measures and encouraged China to engage in constructive dialogue. Separately, Philippine Defence Minister Gilberto Teodoro condemned China's actions as 'patently illegal' and highlighted the need for readiness to confront such incidents.
