Defection: A Turning Point in Sudan's Protracted Conflict
In a significant development, a senior commander from Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Abuagla Keikal, has defected to the Sudanese army after months of escalating conflict. The move marks the first high-profile defection, underscoring the increasing tensions and humanitarian crisis in the region.
In a significant development in Sudan's protracted conflict, a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander has defected to the Sudanese army. The news was announced on Sunday, highlighting the first major defection since hostilities between the RSF and Sudan's military began over 18 months ago.
Photos circulated online, allegedly showing Abuagla Keikal, a former army officer who rose to become the RSF's top commander in El Gezira, aligning with the army once again. Supporters suggest that Keikal's decision was prompted by disillusionment with the RSF's 'destructive agenda,' although no official statement has been made by Keikal himself.
This conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has displaced over 10 million people and plunged parts of Sudan into severe hunger and humanitarian distress. The fighting has roots in a power struggle following a coup staged in 2021 by the army and RSF after the ousting of Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
