Mumbai's New Year Traffic Crackdown: 23,000 Motorists Penalized

In a sweeping crackdown on New Year's Eve, Mumbai police issued fines to more than 23,000 motorists for traffic violations such as drunk driving, obstructing traffic, and other offenses, officials reported on Wednesday.
The traffic police sanctioned 17,800 vehicles, collecting a significant Rs 89,19,750 through e-challans, while city police additionally fined 5,670 motorists. Overall, 46,143 vehicles were checked at 107 different locations across the city, and 333 individuals were apprehended for driving under the influence.
The violations included reckless driving like jumping signals and riding without helmets, as well as using mobile phones behind the wheel. Notably, key locations such as the Gateway of India were under tight surveillance to ensure the safety of the revelers.
