Cracking Down on Border Scams: Thailand's Urgent Challenge

Thailand is intensifying efforts to dismantle scam compounds along its border with Myanmar, with the support of China. Despite recent crackdowns, only a small fraction of workers have been rescued. Thailand's border operations targeting scam compounds near Myanmar are facing criticism for their limited success in rescuing workers, as an influential opposition lawmaker urges stronger measures to eliminate pervasive illicit activities.

Rangsiman Rome, a staunch advocate against border scam networks, highlighted the ongoing challenges despite only 10,000 of 300,000 workers being rescued. He emphasized that without sustained intervention, these operations could continue unchecked.

Thai authorities, backed by China, are focusing on dismantling these lucrative scams, with the Prime Minister prioritizing the issue. Yet, efforts are hampered by alleged complicity of Thai officials and the involvement of powerful figures like Myanmar's Colonel Saw Chit Thu.
