The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has achieved a significant milestone in the nationwide effort to eliminate pit toilets in public schools, successfully eradicating over 93% of identified unsafe sanitation facilities.

This achievement was highlighted by Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube during her presentation to the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education in Parliament. The committee was briefed on the analysis, implications, and effects of the President’s 2025 State of the Nation Address, which emphasized the urgency of providing safe and dignified sanitation for all learners.

A Collaborative Achievement Despite Fiscal Challenges

In a statement on Tuesday, the DBE reaffirmed its commitment to meeting the 31 March 2025 deadline set by President Cyril Ramaphosa for the complete eradication of unsafe school sanitation. This progress has been made possible through the collective efforts of national and provincial education departments, private sector partners, and development organizations, who have worked together to accelerate the implementation of safer sanitation solutions.

Despite ongoing fiscal constraints, rising construction costs, and infrastructure backlogs, the department remains resolute in its mission. The SAFE (Sanitation Appropriate for Education) initiative continues to be a non-negotiable priority, ensuring that every school in South Africa is equipped with hygienic and safe facilities.

Intensified Efforts in High-Impact Provinces

Recognizing that challenges remain, Minister Gwarube announced plans to intensify monitoring and intervention efforts, particularly in provinces still grappling with sanitation backlogs. The Eastern Cape and Limpopo, two regions historically most affected by inadequate sanitation infrastructure, will be the focus of her upcoming site visits.

These visits will provide an opportunity for the Minister to directly assess the final phase of the implementation process and engage with school leadership, community members, and project teams. This hands-on approach will help address any remaining obstacles and ensure timely project completion.

Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

As the March 2025 deadline approaches, the DBE has pledged to provide regular progress updates. Transparency and accountability remain central to the department’s efforts, as it works to uphold the fundamental right of every learner to access safe and dignified sanitation.

The department encourages continued collaboration between stakeholders to sustain the momentum and fully eradicate pit toilets from South African schools. Through persistent efforts and strategic partnerships, the goal of achieving 100% safe sanitation in schools is within reach.
