Unrest in the Himalayas: Nepal's Turbulent Political Landscape
Nepal's government is probing violence during a pro-monarchy rally where two people died and over a hundred were injured as supporters clashed with police. The unrest highlights the nation's political instability since the monarchy's abolition in 2008, stifling economic growth amid growing public discontent.
Nepal is grappling with the aftermath of violent clashes during a rally by supporters of the former monarchy, seeking its restoration. This unrest claimed two lives and left over 112 injured, including 77 security personnel, as demonstrators hurled stones and vandalized properties in the capital city, Kathmandu.
Authorities reported extensive damage, including vandalism of homes, shops, and a political party office. Protesters also confiscated a weapon from the police. The government's stern response included arresting 105 individuals, among them pro-monarchy leaders, labeling the chaos as anarchical rather than a legitimate protest.
This ongoing political instability, rooted in the monarchy's abolition in 2008, continues to hinder Nepal's economic progress. With the nation having experienced 14 different governments since then, public dissatisfaction grows due to unfulfilled economic development promises, challenging the country's role as a buffer between China and India.
