The Meghalaya government has imposed a night curfew on areas along the approximately 40 km unfenced stretch of the India-Bangladesh border. This measure aims to curb infiltration and smuggling, according to officials.
A senior home department official revealed that the decision followed intelligence inputs hinting at possible cross-border movements. Deputy commissioners in border districts have been instructed to enforce restrictions vigorously to prevent illegal activities.
In the West Jaintia Hills district, the administration declared a curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM, extending up to 200 meters from the international border. The movement of individuals intending to cross the border, unauthorized assemblies of five or more people, and carrying weapons are prohibited. Security agencies have alerted Home Minister Prestone Tynsong about potential threats from militant groups, smugglers, and other unlawful elements.
