The government assured citizens on Friday that the country possesses ample food stocks to meet domestic demands, cautioning traders and wholesalers against creating artificial shortages by hoarding essential items.

This announcement coincides with escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, with the latter engaging in unprovoked shelling and drone strikes on border towns.

Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi took to social media to urge the public not to panic-buy food grains, dismissing misinformation about food shortages.

Joshi stated, "We have food stocks far exceeding required norms. Do not believe propaganda messages," while warning that hoarders will face legal action under the Essential Commodities Act.

In an official statement, Joshi reiterated that essential commodities such as rice, wheat, and pulses are available in surplus.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan evaluated the food stock situation and kharif sowing readiness, directing officials to support farmers in conflict-affected border areas.

Chouhan plans discussions with chief ministers of border states like Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab for possible assistance if evacuations are necessary.

The food ministry reported rice and wheat stocks significantly exceeding buffer norms, ensuring food security nationwide.

Currently, India also holds 17 lakh tonnes of edible oil stocks, with ample mustard oil during the peak production season.

In the sugar sector, this year's production commenced with a notable surplus, ensuring stability. The production outlook remains positive due to favorable climate conditions.
