Several Indian youngsters, including individuals from Goa, are being held in jails and immigration detention centers in the United States reportedly due to expired visas or invalid documentation, highlighted AAP MLA Venzy Viegas in the Goa state assembly.
Viegas emphasized the dire need for the government to intervene swiftly, urging collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in the US to identify and assist the detainees. Most prisoners reportedly have not communicated with their families, leaving them in worry.
The issue points to a broader concern of unemployment driving youth abroad for job opportunities. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant agreed to address the situation and asked Viegas for specific details about the detained youth to involve central authorities.
