Odisha Launches Mobile Migrant Resource Centre to Combat Distress Migration

Odisha has inaugurated its first Mobile Migrant Resource Centre to address distress migration in Ganjam and Kendrapara districts. This initiative, involving several organizations, aims to create awareness and support livelihood development for returning migrants, women, and youth. A toll-free helpline has also been established for migrants in emergencies.

In a significant move to address distress migration, Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo inaugurated the state's inaugural Mobile Migrant Resource Centre. The centre, targeting areas within Ganjam and Kendrapara districts, is poised to raise awareness on the pressing issue of migration.

This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the state's Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment Department, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and the United Nations Migrant Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MMTF). These organizations aim to combat migration challenges through structured support and sustainable solutions.

Singh Deo emphasized that the state government is focused on making migrant workers, women, and youth self-reliant by providing employment opportunities locally. Additionally, a toll-free helpline, 1800-345-7885, has been introduced, enabling migrants to seek assistance during emergencies. This resource is expected to play a pivotal role in mitigating distressed migration effectively.
