Delhi Residents to Show Water Bill for Property Registration

Delhi residents will soon need to present a water bill during property registration, as mandated by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to increase revenue and curb illegal connections. With only 29 lakh water connections compared to 57 lakh electricity connections, the policy aims to regularize water use and boost infrastructure.

In a significant move to increase revenue and regulate water usage, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has mandated the presentation of a water bill at the time of property registration in the national capital. This decision aims to curb illegal connections and address the disparity between the 29 lakh water connections and the 57 lakh electricity connections.

The proposal, approved at a board meeting chaired by Water Minister Parvesh Verma, is geared towards expanding the city's water and sewer network and improving efficiency. By formalizing water connections, the DJB hopes to significantly reduce its high non-revenue water (NRW) rate of 50-52%, attributed to leakages, thefts, and unbilled usage.

In unauthorized colonies, where residents frequently use water services without formal connections, this initiative promises substantial impact. With reduced fees for legalizing connections and ongoing feedback from the revenue department, the policy is expected to facilitate greater compliance and financial stability for the DJB.
