The father of a 23-year-old woman, who was reportedly gang-raped in West Bengal's Durgapur, has appealed to the Odisha government to facilitate her transfer to Bhubaneswar for further treatment, citing a threat to her life.
The survivor, a second-year MBBS student, is currently receiving medical care in Durgapur. Her worried parents, residents of Jaleswar in Balasore district, immediately traveled to West Bengal upon learning of the assault.
In a conversation with PTI, the father expressed his fears, stating, 'I appeal to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to help shift my daughter to Bhubaneswar. I fear that her life may be in danger.'
The Dalit woman was allegedly raped by three men after leaving her campus with a male student around 8 pm on Friday, officials reported. The student's father voiced distrust, saying his family is too frightened to trust anyone in West Bengal.
'They will kill my daughter,' he said, emphasizing a perceived threat despite her improved health condition. His plea to the Odisha government came after a team from Balasore visited the hospital, following directions from CM Majhi, who had called him to discuss the situation.
When questioned about West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's statement that girls should not leave campus at night, the father refuted the claim, alleging an attempt to suppress the incident. He described his daughter's male companion fleeing during the attack and failing to alert anyone, leaving her vulnerable.
Additional District Magistrate of Balasore, Hemant Singh, confirmed the arrest of three suspects within 36 hours, expressing hope for justice. A Balasore district team assured the family of Odisha's support, stating that engagement with West Bengal Police is ongoing.
In the political arena, BJP MP Pratap Sarangi criticized Banerjee's government, accusing it of a law and order breakdown in the state.
