U.S. Pressures Hamas Amid Fragile Gaza Ceasefire
The U.S. increased pressure on Hamas to disarm during the fragile Gaza ceasefire, as President Trump sought to solidify the truce. Vice President JD Vance highlighted ongoing challenges, including breaches and the return of hostages, while urging Hamas to cooperate or face severe consequences. Mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey continue.
The United States has intensified efforts to ensure Hamas disarms as part of the fragile Gaza ceasefire, with President Donald Trump keen on solidifying the peace agreement.
During a visit to Israel, U.S. Vice President JD Vance acknowledged progress but warned that Hamas must cooperate or face obliteration, citing Trump's ultimatum of "fast, furious and brutal force." Meanwhile, both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the truce, which has seen intermittent violence and difficulties in returning hostage bodies and delivering aid.
Mediators Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, are pushing the parties towards the complex next phase of negotiations. This involves concessions that have derailed previous peace efforts, including the disarmament of Hamas and the establishment of a technocratic governing body in Gaza. Vance cautioned that achieving a comprehensive ceasefire deal would require extensive time and effort, amid strong criticisms from human rights groups over the U.S. threats of violence.
