An Indian-American government employee, Mehul Goswami, was arrested on charges of grand larceny after allegedly working a second full-time job during his official work hours. Goswami, 39, reportedly stole over $50,000 from New York State.
Authorities, including the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Inspector General's Office, arrested Goswami last week. He was working remotely for the New York State Office of Information Technology Services while allegedly holding a simultaneous position in the town of Malta.
If convicted, Goswami could face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000. New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang emphasized the breach of trust in public service, pledging accountability. Goswami was arraigned and released on his own recognizance, awaiting further proceedings.
