Montenegro Suspends Visa-Free Access for Turks Amid Violence

Montenegro has temporarily revoked visa-free entry for Turkish nationals after violence broke out in Podgorica, following a stabbing incident. Authorities have detained dozens of Turkish and Azerbaijani citizens. Efforts are being made to ensure the safety of Turkish residents while discussions with Turkish officials emphasize the protection of their rights.

Montenegro has suspended its visa-free regime for Turkish nationals following a weekend marred by violence in Podgorica. The altercation began with the stabbing of a Montenegrin man, allegedly by a group of Turkish citizens, an incident that escalated tensions on the streets.

In an aftermath of retaliatory violence, dozens of Turkish and Azerbaijani individuals were detained by police, who also fined and deported several people for lacking legal residency. Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic called for calm as Turkish properties were attacked and citizens sought refuge amid threats.

The Turkish government reached out, urging Montenegro to safeguard its nationals. Although interim visas have been imposed, Montenegro is facilitating Turkish entries to ease disruptions. There is a growing trend of Turkish citizens engaging in local business ahead of Montenegro's anticipated EU accession.
