In a groundbreaking move, Haryana's prisons have introduced innovative educational initiatives aimed at transforming the lives of inmates. These initiatives, launched Saturday, include skill development centres, polytechnic diploma courses, and ITI-level vocational programmes, inaugurated by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, under the project 'Empowering Lives Behind Bars.'
The program signifies a new paradigm in correctional justice, focusing on inmate reintegration through structured education and skill acquisition. As part of the reform, a month-long anti-drug awareness campaign was also launched across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh to tackle substance abuse challenges in the region.
In his address, CJI Kant stressed the importance of support systems for ex-inmates to ensure successful societal reintegration. He advocated for district-level reintegration boards and highlighted the critical need for psychological rehabilitation alongside vocational training to foster a holistic environment for personal development.
