The Centre revealed in Parliament that residents of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands eligible for benefits are not required to have an Islander card, providing that they meet certain criteria. This announcement came after local MP Bishnu Pada Ray inquired about the situation, emphasizing the need for a reissuance of cards to genuine islanders who have been overlooked.
Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, clarified in his response to the Lok Sabha that eligible residents enjoy perks such as sea and air travel concessions within the islands. The Andaman and Nicobar administration is currently addressing a public request for a re-survey to confirm the issuance of islander cards to legitimate residents left without one.
The Islander card is crucial for verifying permanent residency, providing access to administrative and travel-related discounts. As the discussion continues, ensuring that true islanders receive their rightful privileges remains a priority for local authorities.
