The Democratic Republic of Congo has witnessed an alarming escalation of violence in recent days, with around 200,000 people fleeing their homes as M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, advance on the strategic town of Uvira. The United Nations confirmed at least 74 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in escalating clashes.

Amidst growing international concern, the United States, along with nine other members of the International Contact Group, condemned the renewed violence. They criticized the M23 rebel offensive, highlighting the destabilizing potential for the region, with the increasing use of drones posing a significant threat to civilians.

In spite of ongoing peace efforts led by the U.S., which saw the Rwandan and Congolese leaders sign a peace pact in Washington, violence persists. Meanwhile, M23's leader expressed intentions to continue supporting Qatari-led peace talks, while the international community calls for a ceasefire and Rwandan withdrawal from Congo.
