The Maharashtra Cabinet has taken a significant step by approving an ordinance to amend a 1961 law. This amendment, aimed at Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections, ensures that decisions by election officers on nomination papers will be deemed final, expediting the electoral process.
This legislative change comes at a critical juncture as elections to these rural local bodies loom near. The ordinance, approved under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, aims to address delays caused by pending appeals in district courts, which previously hindered timely elections.
The amendment empowers the government to establish rules for these elections, aligning with a Supreme Court directive to complete polls for 336 Panchayat Samitis and 32 Zilla Parishads by January 31. The proactive measure is expected to foster a more streamlined and efficient electoral process in Maharashtra.
