India's states and Union territories have hit a crucial milestone in their ongoing efforts to purify the Public Distribution System (PDS) by eliminating over 2.12 crore fake beneficiaries, as reported to Parliament. This cleanup is part of a larger list of 8.51 crore suspected entries compiled by the central government.
According to the Minister of State for Consumers and Food, Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, the compilation required state governments to carry out field verifications and determine appropriate actions. The deletion of these beneficiaries paves the way for more legitimate recipients to receive assistance under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
In preparation for the 2024-25 period, a rigorous data analytics exercise scrutinized various Key Performance Indexes (KPIs) and corroborated PDS data with several governmental databases. This methodical check-up ensures a more transparent and efficient distribution of food resources to those genuinely in need.
