The Supreme Court has shown urgency in the BRS MLAs' disqualification matter, demanding a status update from the Telangana Assembly speaker within two weeks. The speaker's request for an eight-week extension for health reasons faced rejection.
This decision stems from a prior directive mandating a resolution to these disqualification pleas in three months, a timeline that had already lapsed. The ongoing delay is dubbed gross contempt by the court.
Critically, the court reiterated that the speaker, serving as a tribunal under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, does not enjoy constitutional immunity. Henceforth, swift compliance is expected.
