Lithuania Accuses GRU of Orchestrating Arson Attacks
Lithuanian authorities accuse Russia's GRU military intelligence of planning arson attacks targeting a plant supplying Ukraine. Six individuals from various countries were arrested, facing severe penalties. Attempts linked to a coordinated group were seen in other European countries. Financial motives were a key driver. Russia has denied involvement.
In a bold accusation, Lithuanian authorities have pointed a finger at Russia's GRU military intelligence service, alleging its involvement in orchestrating arson attacks against a critical plant supplying radio wave scanners to Ukraine. This plant plays a pivotal role in supporting the Ukrainian army amidst ongoing tensions.
Authorities have arrested and charged six individuals from Spain, Colombia, Cuba, Russia, and Belarus in connection with the 2024 attacks. If convicted, these individuals face up to 15 years of imprisonment. Senior prosecutor Arturas Urbelis highlighted the coordinated nature of the crimes, emphasizing that the accused received orders from individuals connected to Russia's GRU.
While Russia has not yet responded to these allegations, similar arson attempts were reportedly executed in Poland, Romania, and the Czech Republic, targeting vital infrastructure. This series of events marks a complex geopolitical confrontation, with financial incentives believed to be a primary motivation for the perpetrators.
