The Supreme Court of India has announced it will commence the final hearing on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, on May 5. Over 200 petitions challenge the Act's constitutional validity, and the Court has set procedural directions for these hearings.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, alongside Justices Joymalaya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, will preside over the hearings. Key petitioners, including the Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML), will present arguments for one-and-a-half days, while the government will have a day to respond.
The Act seeks to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian, Jain, and Parsi migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived on or before December 31, 2014. The Court will also address specific issues related to Assam and Tripura, regions with unique immigration timelines under the Act.
