The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Thursday a new QR code-based identification system aimed at bolstering security at counting centers. This initiative is part of the Commission's ongoing efforts to enhance transparency and efficiency in election management.
Set to be implemented before the May 4 vote count for Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Puducherry, and for by-elections in seven assembly constituencies, the system is also designed for future general and state legislative elections. This latest step comes as part of over 30 security and efficiency improvements introduced by the ECI in the past year.
The process includes a three-tier identity verification system where photo IDs are manually checked at two security levels, and QR code scanning verifies identities at the third and final level near counting halls. This new protocol is mandatory for entry of authorized personnel including returning officers, counting staff, and candidates. A media center will also be established near counting halls for authorized press access.
