Tensions in the Taiwan Strait: Dutch Frigate's Controversial Passage

China's military announced on Friday that it had deployed naval and air units to follow and observe the Dutch frigate De Ruyter as it sailed through the Taiwan Strait.

The Netherlands justified the warship's presence in the region for diplomatic, security, and economic reasons, affirming compliance with international regulations. This follows Beijing's assertion last week that the same vessel unlawfully entered the Paracel Islands area in the contentious South China Sea, to which the Dutch government offered a similar response.

The People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command (ETC) issued a statement emphasizing that its forces will maintain high vigilance to steadfastly protect China's sovereignty and security, in addition to promoting regional peace and stability. Beijing, which claims authority over democratically governed Taiwan, also regards the critical strait as Chinese territorial waters.
