EU Imposes Sanctions on Iran Over Maritime Threats
The European Union has imposed sanctions on two Iranian individuals and a unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for threatening maritime traffic freedom in the Strait of Hormuz. This marks the first use of the EU's new powers to sanction Iran for navigation restrictions.
The European Union announced on Monday the imposition of sanctions against two Iranian individuals and a unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This measure addresses threats to maritime traffic freedom in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supply passes.
This decision marks the first instance where the EU has utilized new powers designed to sanction Iran for restricting freedom of navigation. In their statement, the EU highlighted the addition of the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the IRGC Navy to its list, along with individuals Mohammad Akbarzadeh and Hamid Hosseini.
The EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, emphasized the gravity of Iran's actions, following Iran's attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. Kallas remarked on the EU's readiness to apply its new regime again if necessary.
