Trout anglers fishing in the Taupō District will soon be allowed to keep more fish, with the daily bag limit increasing from six to eight trout from 1 July. Hunting and Fishing Minister James Meager said the decision follows scientific evidence showing the region's trout population has grown to a level that is placing pressure on smelt. This primary food source helps trout grow and maintain good condition.

Lake Taupō is home to one of New Zealand's most famous freshwater fisheries, attracting local and international anglers each year. Officials believe increasing the harvest limit will help create a better balance between trout numbers and available food sources. Meager said maintaining healthy trout populations requires active management, particularly because Taupō's spawning streams produce large numbers of juvenile fish every year.

Fishery managers aim to improve trout size and condition

According to fisheries data, smelt populations have come under increasing pressure due to the large number of trout competing for food. Past experiences have shown that when smelt numbers decline significantly, trout growth rates slow and overall fish condition suffers. The Minister described the increased bag limit as a practical response designed to improve the long-term quality of the fishery while also giving anglers more opportunities to take fish home. Officials expect the change to support stronger trout growth over time by reducing pressure on food supplies and helping maintain a healthier balance within the lake ecosystem.

The move is also expected to encourage greater participation in recreational fishing, providing benefits for families who rely on freshwater fishing as a food source and for visitors travelling to the region.

Regulation changes expected to support local economy

The Taupō trout fishery plays a significant role in the local economy. Around 30,000 fishing licences are sold each year, generating approximately $1.3 million in annual revenue. Beyond licence sales, the fishery supports tourism operators, accommodation providers, retailers and hospitality businesses, contributing tens of millions of dollars in economic activity and supporting hundreds of jobs across the region. Alongside the bag limit increase, several smaller regulation changes have also been approved to simplify fishing rules.

One of the key changes involves removing the fixed February closure at Lake Otamangakau. Fisheries managers will instead use a more flexible approach that considers expected weather conditions when making management decisions. Meager said the adjustments are intended to make regulations easier for anglers to understand while supporting sustainable freshwater fishing opportunities for future generations.

The Government says the changes reflect its ongoing focus on improving access to recreational fishing while ensuring New Zealand's iconic fisheries remain healthy and productive in the years ahead.
