Indian Navy Safely Recovers Missile Warhead From Oil Tanker

Following the alert, the Southern Naval Command based in Kochi deployed a specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to assess the situation.

The Indian Navy has successfully completed a delicate operation to recover an unexploded missile warhead from a crude oil tanker that was sailing towards Kochi after an incident at sea.

The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, MT Olympic Life, reported an explosion in its hull while sailing off the coast of Oman on May 26. The vessel, travelling from Fujairah in the UAE to Kochi, later informed authorities that an unexploded ordnance was lodged onboard. No Indian nationals were among the crew members on the ship.

Information about the incident was shared through the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), prompting an immediate response from the Indian Navy.

Navy Experts Trace Warhead Inside Fuel Tank

Their investigation revealed that a projectile had pierced the ship's hull, passed through several structural sections and finally become embedded inside one of the vessel's fuel storage tanks.

The discovery presented a major challenge because the unexploded missile warhead was located in a highly sensitive area containing fuel. Any mistake during the recovery process could have posed serious risks to the vessel, its crew and nearby port facilities.

The EOD specialists carried out a carefully planned operation over an extended period. Safety protocols were implemented at every stage before advanced diagnostic equipment was used to examine the warhead and identify its detonation mechanism. Once the device was isolated and secured, the team safely extracted the warhead along with associated debris from the tanker.

The recovered ordnance has since been transported to a secure facility where it will be safely stored and subjected to detailed examination by experts. The operation showcased the Indian Navy's technical expertise in handling complex explosive threats in challenging maritime environments. It also highlighted the importance of coordination among multiple agencies when responding to emergencies involving commercial vessels.

Officials noted that the Navy acted swiftly despite the tanker being foreign-flagged and carrying no Indian nationals. The response reflected India's commitment to ensuring safety at sea and supporting vessels operating in the wider Indian Ocean region. The successful completion of the mission reinforces the Indian Navy's reputation as a dependable maritime force capable of managing high-risk situations while safeguarding lives, critical infrastructure and international shipping routes.
