Jharkhand Congress condemned the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as an MP, calling it a ''murder of democracy''.
Rahul Gandhi was on Friday disqualified from Lok Sabha following his conviction by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case. The disqualification will bar 52-year-old Gandhi from contesting polls for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction and sentence.
The court in Surat sentenced Gandhi on Thursday to two years in jail in a defamation case, filed on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, ''How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?'' Condemning the decision, Congress state president Rajesh Thakur said, ''The decision of his disqualification is shocking and condemnable. Such haste has never been seen in the parliamentary politics of India. It's a murder of democracy.'' ''Today, the entire government machinery is under pressure. The prime minister's friends are looting people's money. Instead of taking action against them, he is trying to silence the voice of Rahul Gandhi who is speaking against them.'' ''We respect the court. We are with Rahul ji and will protest from the streets to the Parliament. The voice of the people will remain strong.'' Meanwhile, Jharkhand BJP has welcomed the decision of Rahul Gandhi's disqualification as an MP.
BJP state president Deepak Prakash said, ''The law is equal for everyone in the country. Rahul Gandhi had openly called people with Modi surname 'chor'. He had insulted the backward people of the society.''
