The BJP is poised for major organizational changes, beginning with a fresh membership drive followed by internal elections leading to the selection of a new party president.
Incumbent president J P Nadda's extended tenure is set to end on June 30. However, a recent amendment to the BJP's constitution grants the Parliamentary Board the authority to extend his term in emergency situations.
Sources indicate that Nadda’s induction into the Union Cabinet as the Minister of Health, and Chemicals and Fertilisers necessitates his replacement. Previous precedents suggest a working president might be appointed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision not to retain Nadda in his Cabinet hints at potential new leadership. Despite names like Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupender Yadav being floated, the final decision rests with the top brass.
Additionally, the shift of some state BJP presidents to government roles and recent electoral setbacks could bring new faces to the fore. Names like Sukanta Majumdar and Samrat Choudhary are emerging as possible candidates for key positions.
The organizational polls and changes, previously on hold due to electoral campaigns, will now commence earnestly, addressing the BJP's underwhelming performance in some states. Though the party lost its Lok Sabha majority, its alliance, NDA, maintained a comfortable majority.
