The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained the Jalandhar West assembly seat with its candidate Mohinder Bhagat securing victory over the BJP's Sheetal Angural by a margin of 37,325 votes in the bypoll held recently.
This bypoll was necessitated after Angural, formerly an AAP legislator, resigned and joined the BJP in March. The result was seen as a boost for Punjab's ruling party following its setback in the Lok Sabha polls, where it could only secure three of the state’s thirteen parliamentary constituencies.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann lauded the victory, stating it shows the electorate’s satisfaction with the AAP government's work. Mohinder Bhagat, expressing gratitude, highlighted the importance of the welfare activities conducted by the Mann administration in securing the voters' mandate. The AAP now holds 91 MLAs in the 117-member Punjab assembly.
