The ruling BJP in Tripura has made a significant mark by winning around 70 percent of the seats in the state's three-tier panchayat system uncontested, an official confirmed on Tuesday.

Across a total of 6,889 seats in the gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishads, the BJP clinched 4,805 seats without any competition. In the gram panchayats alone, the party won 4,550 out of 6,370 seats uncontested, sparing them from polling in 71 percent of the seats.

The BJP's ally, Tipra Motha, is contesting in 138 seats. One seat in Maheskhala Panchayat remains vacant due to a candidate's death, State Election Commission Secretary Asit Kumar Das reported.

Additionally, in the panchayat samitis, the BJP secured 235 out of 423 seats uncontested. The remaining 188 seats will go to polls, with the BJP, CPI(M), Congress, and Tipra Motha fielding candidates. For the zilla parishads, the BJP secured 20 out of 116 seats uncontested.

The deadline for candidate withdrawal was July 22, with polling scheduled for August 8 and vote counting set for August 12. In the last elections, BJP had won 96 percent of the seats uncontested.
