Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh's interim government following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid deadly protests. President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the announcement after a significant meeting. Yunus, who is abroad, welcomed the fall of Hasina's regime.
Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus was appointed head of Bangladesh's interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday, a decision following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure after violent protests against her administration over a contentious job quota system.
The appointment was finalized during a critical meeting at Bangabhaban with President Shahabuddin, military chiefs, and representatives from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, as noted by Press Secretary Md. Joynal Abedin.
Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his anti-poverty efforts through Grameen Bank, remains abroad but termed the political shift as Bangladesh's “second liberation.” The interim cabinet's advisers will be announced after further discussions with political parties.
