Shiv Sena Parliamentary Party Leader, Shrikant Eknath Shinde has demanded a ban on online gaming in India, citing significant dangers, particularly regarding mental health and financial instability. Shinde's concerns were voiced during the recently concluded Budget Session of Parliament.
In a speech during the Lok Sabha session, Shinde specifically called for a thorough investigation into the potential ban of platforms such as 'Junglee Rummy.' He emphasized the rise in addiction to online games with financial stakes, urging immediate action to educate students in schools and colleges on the associated risks.
According to Shinde, the online gaming market in India is projected to reach $30 billion by 2025, with a considerable share contributed by games like Junglee Rummy. He also highlighted statistics from a 2023 National Council report, which indicated that 30% of youth and 3.5% of adults are experiencing mental health issues due to online gaming. Furthermore, he noted that 40% of the population is lured by the promise of financial gain, often leading to severe personal and family financial crises, and in extreme cases, even suicide.
