Australia has issued a warning to airlines operating between its airports and New Zealand, citing Chinese warships conducting live-fire exercises in the Tasman Sea. The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
The alert follows reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corp that Airservices Australia has cautioned commercial pilots about potential hazards in the region due to the presence of three Chinese warships conducting drills near Australia's eastern coastline.
International flight paths have already shifted in response to these exercises. Criticism has emerged regarding the chosen location of the military displays, which some see as unnecessarily disruptive, given the vast alternatives available in the ocean.
