In a dramatic escalation of legal proceedings, Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has been charged with treason amid allegations of plotting to overthrow the nation's enduring leader, President Yoweri Museveni. Facing a potentially dire penalty, Besigye appeared in court while supporters fervently petition for his release.
Besigye's current predicament began last month following his disappearance in Nairobi and subsequent presentation at a military tribunal in Kampala. Though the Supreme Court halted the military trial, deeming it unlawful for civilians, Besigye remains detained, prompting a hunger strike due to declining health.
Amnesty International has loudly condemned Besigye's abduction and detention, which they assert breach international human rights laws. As political tension mounts prior to next year's elections, concerns loom over Uganda's historical lack of peaceful power transitions.
