Migrant's Struggle: Wrongful Deportation and Mistreatment in El Salvador Prison
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, wrongfully deported from the U.S. to El Salvador, reports severe mistreatment in a Salvadoran prison. Despite a court ruling against his deportation due to gang-related threats, an administrative error led to his removal. Now back in U.S custody, he faces criminal charges related to a human smuggling ring.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a migrant wrongfully deported to El Salvador, has reported severe mistreatment in a high-security prison in the country, according to a recent court filing.
Garcia, a Maryland resident with a U.S. citizen wife and child, was deported in March despite a 2019 court ruling prohibiting it due to potential threats from gangs. His deportation was said to be an 'administrative error,' as critics point to this case under President Trump's administration prioritizing deportations over legal due process.
Following his deportation, Garcia described experiencing severe beatings, sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and psychological torture during his time in the CECOT prison, leading to significant weight loss. He has returned to the U.S. facing smuggling charges but has pleaded not guilty, with the government planning for his deportation once more.
