In a pivotal announcement, Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma introduced a relief package for those with unauthorized water connections in the national capital, promising a 96% reduction in penalties under new Delhi Jal Board (DJB) schemes. He revealed that the board's compound interest, formerly at five percent, would also be curtailed.
Minister Verma emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting the city's disproportionate power and water connections. This scheme, he asserted, will directly benefit many Delhi residents. He also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the GST reforms, referring to them as a national 'gift'.
Verma underscored the challenges faced by the DJB, which is mired in debt. Despite these obstacles, efforts are underway to modernize Delhi's water infrastructure, including replacing old water and sewer lines and cleaning the Yamuna River. The DJB's 'One Zone, One Operator' policy aims to overhaul water management by assigning designated operators to various zones, promising improved service and accountability.
