Zelenskiy's Delegates Head to U.S.: A Crucial Bid for Peace Amid Crisis
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy dispatches a delegation, led by Rustem Umerov, to the U.S. to negotiate an agreement to end Russia's war. The delegation comes amid a governmental shake-up following a corruption scandal and ongoing military struggles against Russia, compelling political and public scrutiny.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced Saturday that a delegation, led by Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, is heading to the United States to engage in pivotal talks aimed at terminating Russia's ongoing conflict. This move follows the resignation of previous lead negotiator Andriy Yermak, who stepped down after anti-corruption authorities investigated him.
Zelenskiy expressed hopes that discussions held in Geneva last weekend with U.S. officials will be solidified on Sunday. In those talks, Ukraine provided a counterproposal to plans proposed by U.S. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll during a visit to Kyiv two weeks ago.
Umerov has reported back on the objectives, emphasizing prompt and meaningful actions to end the war. The negotiations happen at a time when Ukraine is feeling significant pressure from Washington to agree to peace terms, against a backdrop of a major corruption scandal and Russian advances.
