In a noteworthy development, Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad announced on Saturday that the State Election Commission (SEC) of Maharashtra has responded positively to the party's demands regarding errors in the draft electoral rolls. This move follows the detection of substantial voter list fraud, including unauthorized voter ward transfers.
The SEC, responding to a Congress appeal, directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to rigorously verify and address the bulk objections raised. This decision came after a meeting between Congress leaders and State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare, highlighting the issue of 'voter list hera-pheri' (fraud).
Marking a significant achievement for the Congress, the SEC agreed to release a list of over 1.1 million duplicated voter names from the draft rolls, now accessible publicly. Further steps include setting up voter-roll rectification desks at ward offices, aiming to facilitate accurate voter registration, Gaikwad stated, labeling it a 'small but significant victory.'
