In a significant move, the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has announced that candidates in the upcoming municipal corporation, zilla parishad, and panchayat samiti elections will be allowed to file their nomination papers offline. This decision follows its successful implementation during the municipal council elections in December, driven by requests from candidates and political parties.
The SEC meeting, attended by representatives of recognized political parties, was led by State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare. It included discussions with the SEC Secretary Suresh Kakani, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Additional Commissioner Ashwini Joshi, and officials from various civic bodies.
The elections for 336 panchayat samitis, 29 municipal corporations including Mumbai's civic body, and 32 zilla parishads are expected to be held by January 31, though the schedule remains unannounced. Efforts are also underway to address concerns over duplicate voters, with municipal commissioners and district collectors tasked to verify voter lists, aided by a dedicated software and mobile app developed by the BMC.
