Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad announced on Tuesday that her party intends to tackle next month's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections with an emphasis on local civic issues, rather than succumbing to the BJP's religious agenda. Gaikwad insisted that voters are keen to address real city concerns.
In a conversation with reporters, Gaikwad accused the BJP-led Mahayuti government of misappropriating civic funds via the administrator appointed to the BMC, benefiting select contractors and industrialists. She emphasized Congress's commitment to focusing on Mumbai's development and the wellbeing of its residents.
Pointing out the longstanding control of the BMC by the BJP and undivided Shiv Sena, Gaikwad alleged that the BJP exploited central agencies to target opposition leaders and sought to polarize voters along religious lines. Despite the BJP's influence, Gaikwad urged a focus on critical infrastructure and governance issues.
