In a heated critique, RJD MP Manoj Jha has slammed the central government over its move to rebrand the MGNREGA scheme. Jha asserted that the inclusion of 'Ram' in a name doesn't legitimize arbitrary changes, reflecting internal unrest within the BJP and its allies.

He further criticized the significant shift in funding structures from a 90-10 to a 60-40 central-state ratio, arguing that this undermines the scheme's foundational rights-based approach. Jha questioned the government's advisors, emphasizing the scheme's importance as a national safety net now at risk.

The controversy intensified as Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan introduced the Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025 in Lok Sabha. This proposed replacement of the MGNREGA was met with opposition uproar, sparking Congress-led protests across India to defend Mahatma Gandhi's legacy and oppose perceived welfare erosion by the BJP and RSS.
